Abstract:
A reduced calorie chewing gum is provided which does not decrease in viscosity upon chewing and contains less than 65% water-solubles, such as sugars and/or sugar alcohols such as sweeteners, and includes gum base containing high levels of inert fillers, such as calcium carbonate or talc in amounts of at least about 40% by weight, softeners, such as lecithin, and optionally synthetic non-caloric sweeteners, such as aspartame, saccharin, or cyclamates. The chewing gum includes at least about 10% air voids entrapped in the gum base matrix which, upon chewing, become filled with moisture causing a dramatic increase in cud volume.

US Classification:
424 38
Abstract:
An improved compressed soft chewable tablet is provided, which may contain an antacid or other active ingredient, has good flexibility, is breakage resistant and disintegrates immediately upon chewing. The tablet of the invention is formed of particles of antacid and/or other active ingredient which are isolated from other ingredients of the tablet, preferably by admixing particles of active ingredient with particles formed of edible fat or oil absorbed on a fat-absorbing material, such as microcrystalline cellulose and blending such particles with one or more tablet bonders; the tablet also includes additional amounts of tablet bonders, flavors and other conventional tabletting aids to help in making the tablet more palatable. Upon chewing, the tablet is quickly converted to a smooth creamy non-gritty palatable emulsion.

US Patent:
42528305, Feb 24, 1981
Filed:
Jun 18, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/049536
Inventors:
Gary Kehoe - South Salem NY
Wayne J. Puglia - Bellerose Village NY
Frank Witzel - Spring Valley NY
Dominick R. Friello - Danbury CT
Donald A. M. Mackay - Pleasantville NY
Assignee:
Life Savers, Inc. - New York NY
International Classification:
A23G 330
US Classification:
426 5
Abstract:
A chewable chewing gum base is provided which is substantially calorie-free, does not decrease in viscosity upon chewing inasmuch as it is essentially free of water-solubles, and includes gum base containing high levels of inert fillers, such as calcium carbonate or talc in amounts of at least about 50% by weight, softeners, such as lecithin, synthetic non-caloric sweeteners, such as aspartame or cyclamates, and flavors. The chewable gum base includes at least about 10% air voids entrapped in the gum base matrix which, upon chewing, become filled with moisture causing a dramatic increase in cud volume.

Chewing Gum Containing Fatty Or Gelatinous Sweetener And Method

View page
US Patent:
43528244, Oct 5, 1982
Filed:
Aug 24, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/295334
Inventors:
Wayne J. Puglia - Bellerose Village NY
Gary Kehoe - South Salem NY

Process For Preparing Chewing Gum Base Using Solid Elastomer

View page
US Patent:
41873203, Feb 5, 1980
Filed:
May 1, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/901371
Inventors:
Edwin R. Koch - Garden City NY
Leonard P. Abbazia - Brooklyn NY
Wayne J. Puglia - Bellerose Village NY
Assignee:
Warner-Lambert Company - Morris Plains NJ
International Classification:
A23G 330
US Classification:
426 3
Abstract:
A two-stage process for the preparation of a chewing gum base utilizing solid elastomer is described wherein the solid elastomer is initially subjected to high intensity mixing under high shear conditions to masticate the solid until a substantially uniform, lump-free mass is obtained; followed by the step-wise addition of an elastomer solvent and an oleaginous plasticizer with continuous high intensity mixing until a substantially molten, uniform mass is obtained. In the second stage of the process, the remaining chewing gum base ingredients are added, step-wise, with continuous high intensity mixing until a uniform blend of ingredients is obtained. The second stage ingredients, which may include a non-toxic vinyl polymer, a hydrophobic plasticizer, additional oleaginous plasticizer and an emulsifier, are added step-wise in a sequence determined by decreasing order of viscosity. In a modification of the process, the hydrophobic plasticizer or emulsifier may be added with the stage one ingredients. Optional ingredients such as antioxidants and fillers may be added during stage one or stage two; and pigments, which are also optional, may be added during the stage two processing.
